We enable young equestrians in the New York Metropolitan area from financially disadvantaged backgrounds, including those with physical and or emotional disabilities, to pursue their dreams and goals in equestrian sports. Foundation GROW provides scholarships for horseback riding lessons and opportunities to experience barn life. Bonding with a horse promotes life-enhancing values such as self-esteem, integrity, responsibility, and compassion.
In 2001 Ellen Lear and her husband, Pieter Ruig, opened the doors to their new boarding and training facility, Paard Hill Farms, in Shelter Island, New York. They soon found that there were many children and teenagers in the area who loved horses and wanted to take lessons, but whose families could not afford it. Ellen and Pieter raised over $50,000 to create the Paard Hill Farms Scholarship Program and they awarded nearly 20 riding and competition scholarships during a 3 year period.
With the success of the Scholarship Program, Ellen realized the need for a non-profit charitable organization to expand the goals of the Scholarship Program, and in 2006 Foundation GROW, Inc. was founded.
To date the Foundation has awarded 14 scholarships. Thirteen of the recipients received a series of 10 horseback riding lessons and one recipient received a scholarship to attend a 1-week overnight equestrian camp. In addition, Foundation GROW sponsored a benefit horse show in October 2007 for Pal-O-Mine Equestrian, a non-profit organization that teaches therapeutic riding to individuals with disabilities. The Foundation is sponsoring its second annual benefit show for Pal-O-Mine on October 25th, 2008.
Foundation GROW is unique in that it is the only organization that supports young riders based on their financial circumstances.
